Main facts about Morocco
The magic of Morocco can engulf the mind and spirit with its rich and storied past. From the snow-capped mountains to the dunes of the Sahara, to the beautiful beaches lining the Mediterranean and Atlantic ocean, Morocco is a place like none other. The diversity of Morocco's people are as varied as the landscape itself.
One third of the population is made up of several Berber tribes, coming from the Rif and Atlas mountains, the other two third is mostly Arab. In 2002, 55% of the population lived in cities (35% in 1971 and 51% in 1994).
About 1.7 million Moroccans (mainly Berber) live and work abroad, most of them in France. In Holland there are 260,000 Moroccans.
Almost 35% of the population is aged under 15. The average life expectancy for men is 66, for women 71.
Arabic is the official language but the Berber speak their own languanges (there are several). The spoken Arabic differs a lot from written classic Arabic. French is the former colonial language and still used a lot. Spanish is used in the northern coastal areas. We were surprised to notice that more and more people also speak English.
In recent years Morocco has begun to develop a reputation as a country with excellent golf courses partly because the country's King Hassan II was an internationally ranked golfer and those who have created courses in the country have done so very professionally. Slowly but surely the numbers of property developments springing up particularly around Morocco's sixteen best golf courses in Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca and Agadir have increased in line with the demand for them. In total Morocco has in excess of thirty golf courses and there are now a number of tour operators offering golfing holidays to Morocco. This area of tourism is therefore growing rapidly and is an area a property investor might like to investigate further. In addition to targeting the golfing tourist an investor should consider that the demand for properties for resale around the best courses is already quite intense and only likely to intensify further so that those with more substantial sums of money could buy into this period of predicted Morocco property price growth.
Morocco is a country surging ahead into the 21st century while still retaining a wealth of tradition and history. Its progressive ruler is actively encouraging foreign investment and is intent on upping the country’s international profile. It is poised at the beginning of a property and infrastructure development program that should put it firmly on the map for investors and visitors alike.
